Characteristics

The lightest humectant!

Humectants are practically a standard component of emulsions and other water-containing skincare products. They provide moisture, dissolve substances such as active ingredients, and also protect the product itself from drying out.

Propylene glycol is a very short-chain glycol and, with 3 carbon atoms, is just as small as glycerin or propanediol. It is a long-proven solvent and extraction agent with moisture-binding properties and also helps to preserve water-containing products. However, it used to be of petrochemical origin and therefore not suitable for natural products.

Propylene Glycol Green is produced from plant-based glycerin and is thus of purely natural origin. However, it is identical to synthetic propylene glycol and therefore has the same properties. It feels very light on the skin and is barely sticky. Compared to other cosmetic glycols, and especially in contrast to glycerin, propylene glycol is much lighter and exhibits very low stickiness.

Propylene glycol is excellently water-soluble but also possesses a certain potential to dissolve lipophilic substances, making it slightly surface-active (like a weak surfactant). This makes it not only a humectant but also a good solvent and a co-preservative substance.

Therefore, another interesting area of application is as an extraction agent for plant extracts. It can be used alone or in combination with alcohol and/or water. Due to its slightly pronounced lipophilic (fat-loving) properties, you can extract different substances from the plant material than with water or glycerin.
