Characteristics

A fatty alcohol of plant origin (rapeseed) that can be used as a consistency agent predominantly in oil-in-water emulsions, but also in anhydrous products. Also suitable for mattifying and light creams.

Behenyl alcohol is a rapeseed oil-based consistency agent that can be used similarly to cetyl alcohol. It also forms liquid-crystalline networks in emulsions. Behenyl alcohol generates significant viscosity even at very low usage concentrations, provides high heat stability, and creates "stiffer" emulsions than cetyl or cetearyl alcohol. This results in very white, high-gloss emulsions with an elegant appearance that are nonetheless easy to apply. Unlike waxes and wax esters, fatty alcohols have a rather dry and non-greasy effect on the skin, which is why they are also excellently suited for hair conditioners. Due to its high melting point and the associated hardness, behenyl alcohol provides a noticeably protected skin and hair feel, which, however, feels less rich and "drier" than, for example, with cetyl alcohol. It can therefore be dosed at lower levels and is very well suited for oily skin as well as for men's facial products.

Behenyl alcohol acts as a co-emulsifier in water-in-oil emulsions and can be combined with all emulsifiers. It can also, of course, be mixed with other consistency agents to achieve unique textures. In combination with Montanov 14 and/or cetyl alcohol, creamy yet easily spreadable emulsions can be produced. If the concentration is too high, behenyl alcohol—like all fatty alcohols—creates a dull skin feel, acts occlusively (sealing), and feels heavy.

In balms and stick products, it can be used instead of waxes or in combination.
