Moisture-binding active ingredient
High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is a long-chain polysaccharide that can be added to water-based products as an active ingredient for skin hydration and anti-aging effects. It binds water, has a skin-tightening effect, and also provides consistency to the final product.

Characteristics

High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types and all types of water-based cosmetic products. It is primarily used in anti-aging products for the face, especially in creams, serums, and products for the eye area.

Hyaluronic acid remains a universally popular active ingredient in skincare. It has become indispensable in moisturizing and anti-aging products. Actually, the term "hyaluronic acid" is not entirely correct; "sodium hyaluronate" is more accurate. This means that it is not an acid, but rather the salt of an acid. Chemically speaking, sodium hyaluronate is a polysaccharide, i.e., a long-chain complex sugar. Each chain link consists of two components: glucuronic acid and acetylglucosamine. Hyaluronic acid is considered particularly well-tolerated because it occurs naturally in the body. It is found in the "extracellular matrix" – i.e., the area between cells. It plays a major role in, for example, our synovial fluid and the vitreous body of the eye.

High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid consists of particularly long-chain molecules. It is an excellent gelling agent and can bind up to 1000 times its own weight in water. As a cosmetic active ingredient, it binds significant moisture, retains it for a long time, and leaves a pleasantly soft feeling on the skin. Fine lines are minimized in this way, as an increase in skin hydration leads to a plumper, firmer, and more elastic skin structure. Other functions of hyaluronic acid include supporting antioxidants as well as anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects. Hyaluronic acid can therefore also be usefully employed in skin-soothing formulations.

We recommend combining high-molecular-weight and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid in a product. This effectively hydrates the skin on the surface and internally, firms it, and protects it against moisture loss.
