Magnolia bark extract (Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract) is a versatile, natural active ingredient with remarkable skin-care and preservative properties. With a polyphenol content of 98% magnolol and honokiol, it exhibits a strong

It unfolds its full potential particularly in acne care: it specifically reduces acne-causing germs without irritating the skin, thus contributing to a balanced complexion. Its effect on irritated, inflamed, and sensitive skin is also noteworthy. Furthermore, thanks to its antioxidant properties, it can protect against free radicals, making it an interesting active ingredient in anti-aging products as well.

However, magnolia bark extract is not only a valuable ingredient for skincare. In oral care and dental products, it can also be used as an active ingredient to keep bacteria that cause caries and periodontitis in check.

Magnolia bark extract is frequently used as a natural preservative. Its high efficacy, particularly against mold and yeast, makes it an ideal alternative or supplement to conventional preservatives.

Application as a Preservative

Since magnolia bark extract is lipophilic (oil-soluble), it must be specifically incorporated into the water phase with the help of glycols. In return, it provides a preservative effect that is independent of pH value. Depending on the intended use, the extract is added during different phases of the formulation:

✔ As an active ingredient:

• Can also be added directly to the oil phase.
• Supports the skin in cases of inflammation and protects against harmful microorganisms.

✔ As a preservative:

• Must be incorporated into the water phase to specifically protect it from microbial contamination.
• Acts primarily against mold and yeast and should be combined with glycols or other surfactants for a broad-spectrum preservation system. It must be dissolved in glycols. Propanediol can be used, but pentylene glycol or butylene glycol are particularly suitable for this purpose.
• In combination with other mild preservatives, it strengthens the protection of cosmetic formulations.

Usage concentration and processing

• 0.05 - 0.1% as an anti-inflammatory active ingredient
• 0.1 – 0.2% as an antimicrobial agent for (supplementary) preservation
