Characteristics

This supermolecule is mild, effective, and perfect for "clean" cosmetics.

In water-based formulations such as emulsions or surfactant formulations, microorganisms can multiply quickly and impair product shelf life. However, an excessive microbial load also poses a risk to the skin.

Modern preservation systems should both protect the product and be gentle on the skin while respecting its microbiome. This is where hydroxyacetophenone demonstrates its strengths. At its recommended usage concentration, it protects the product without impairing the natural skin flora.

It is a substance that occurs in nature, e.g., in spruce and cloudberries. However, extracting it from these plants would be uneconomical and not particularly sustainable. Therefore, this substance is synthesized and used in cosmetics as a nature-identical ingredient.

Hydroxyacetophenone is not classified as a preservative but rather acts as a support in preservation systems. It can also be used together with "boosters" to compensate for their weaknesses and achieve broad-spectrum efficacy. Glycols (diols) are considered the primary boosters – e.g., pentylene glycol.

But that is not all. Beyond this, hydroxyacetophenone also has an antioxidant effect, thereby supporting product protection against oxidation. Furthermore, it has a skin-soothing effect, making it the perfect addition to skincare products for sensitive skin or skin prone to blemishes.

Hydroxyacetophenone is slightly water-soluble, which is why a usage concentration of 0.5% is typically chosen. At this concentration, it can still be dissolved in water, though it requires a little patience. Stirring or gentle heating accelerates the dissolution process. Furthermore, solubility can be improved by solvents such as the aforementioned diols. Here, too, the combination with pentylene glycol or propanediol is advantageous, and concentrations higher than 0.5% can also be used. It can therefore also be dissolved in the solvent phase (e.g., in propanediol, pentylene glycol, alcohol, or glycerin), which is then added to the water phase.

Usage concentration and processing

  • 0.5 - 1% (usually 0.5%)
  • dissolve in the water phase - takes a little time!
  • highly soluble in glycols (diols), glycerin, and alcohol
  • pH value 3 - 9
