Characteristics

Surprisingly transparent thanks to special platelet technology

Inorganic sun filters are mineral pigments that are distributed extremely finely on the skin, allowing them to absorb UV radiation. This fine distribution requires a particularly high degree of particle milling. Therefore, many UV filter pigments are in the nano-range. This not only allows for a seamless protective film on the skin, but also results in low light reflection, which we know as a white film on the skin that we would rather avoid.

SolarZinc takes a slightly different approach. The pigments are not simply milled very finely, but are present in a special platelet shape. In this way, the pigments can arrange themselves better into a seamless, protective film on the skin. Furthermore, light is scattered between the platelets, resulting in greatly reduced reflection, i.e., less white effect. SolarZinc is therefore not in the nano-range and still enables incredibly transparent sun protection formulations.

For easier processing, the zinc pigments in SolarZinc are already finely dispersed in a carrier oil (MCT oil), allowing for easy use in the oil phase. The product contains 65% zinc oxide as the active substance. In addition to the carrier oil, it also contains polyhydroxystearic acid, which serves as a dispersing agent for the pigments. Nevertheless, we recommend shaking or stirring SolarZinc thoroughly before each use, as the pigments in the oil tend to settle.

In O/W emulsions, mineral pigments tend to "clump together" because they attract each other due to electrical charges. This leads to an uneven distribution and a patchy or missing protective effect. Although this can be avoided through more complex formulations, we recommend the use of SolarZinc in W/O emulsions. In addition to good pigment distribution, W/O emulsions are also more water-resistant, thus improving the water resistance of the sun protection product.

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of a product refers only to the effect against UVB radiation. The protective effect against UVA radiation must be at least one third of the stated SPF, but generally no further information is provided about this.

Although using more UV filters leads to a higher SPF, it depends on significantly more factors. An exact SPF can only be determined by means of in vivo tests in a laboratory. Therefore, when planning a sun protection formulation, the SPF can only be estimated.

The estimated SPF is derived from the theoretical, calculated calculation based on the usage concentration. However, the overall formulation and the processing method are also essential for the actual SPF, and this can, under certain circumstances, deviate significantly. Water and rub resistance are also verified by independent institutes.

Therefore, we cannot guarantee the actual protective effect of this product and advise caution when dealing with UV radiation.

Reference values for SPF usage concentration

SPF 10* -> min. 10 % SolarZinc

SPF 15* -> min. 15 % SolarZinc

SPF 20* -> min. 21 % SolarZinc

SPF 25* -> min. 26 % SolarZinc

SPF 30* -> min. 31 % SolarZinc

SPF 50* -> min. 51 % SolarZinc

*) in silico

The ratio of the absorption of UVA radiation to UVB radiation is approx. 0.8. This means that at an SPF of 30, the protective effect against UVA radiation would be approx. 24. The required ratio of one third protective effect against UVA radiation can therefore be achieved with SolarZinc.

However, the effect of mineral UV filters does not extend as far into UVA radiation as special organic UVA filters can! For high UVA protection, corresponding combinations of UV filters are therefore necessary.
